Family history volunteers searching through the archive

Are you interested in discovering your family history and building your family tree? Does your family have roots in the Yorkshire Dales? If so, the Museum may be able to help you with your research as we have some of the best resources available for uncovering your past.

We have a wealth of information relating to Yorkshire Dales inhabitants throughout the centuries including photographs, accounts of particular families, population records and many other documents donated by generous Dales residents over the years.

Using the resources in the research room is free of charge and if the resources you require are in open storage in the research room, you do not need an appointment. If you would like to access resources that are stored securely, please contact us to make an appointment.

For more information about the research facilities and the resources available, see our Research facilities page.

Whether you are just starting out or are an experienced amateur genealogist, we may also be able to help you with your research, perhaps suggesting how to find particular details or where else to look for geneological information. On Monday and Wednesday each week, Museum volunteers (many of whom have experience of researching their own families) are available to users of the research room to help with any queries they may have. If they are unable to help, we have links with the Upper Dales Family History Group who may be able to help.

If you are considering or are just starting to look into your family tree, you may find the Family History pages on the BBC website at www.bbc.co.uk/history/familyhistory helpful.
