Mary Jane Kilburn
June 13, 2025 2:13 pmToday we received Mary’s knitting sticks, to add to our collection.
During the winter evenings she would spend her time knitting or rugmaking. Mr George Kilburn, her son, once said – “nobody has knitted as many socks as my mother. She even knitted me a pair of stockings when she was 92”
Mary was born on December 2, 1876, at Outhgill, Mallerstang and lived to the age of 105yrs.
Mary lived in Muker, Swaledale and said her longevity was down to hard work.
Even into her 100th year she was still ironing, washing up and cooking.
We love hearing the stories behind the objects we have here at the museum, as this makes them come alive.
Keeping the traditions of Dales life ever present for the enjoyment of people today.
